Brackish Course is run by Jules Marsh at Brackish & Co. This is a small school, not an ad business. I collect what I need to teach you and grade your work, and nothing else. Your information is never sold, rented, or handed to advertisers.
What I collect
- Your name and email address, so I can set up your account and write to you.
- Your profile writing sample, which you write yourself and which I use as a reference for your natural voice when I review your assignments.
- Your coursework: assignment text, uploaded files, notes you save in the classroom, quiz and exam answers, scores, and my feedback.
- Messages you send me through the help button, the question form, or the classroom.
- If you ask about stepping away or a refund: the reason you pick, anything you choose to add, and your email, so I can write back. It goes only to me.
- Purchase records: what you bought, when, and the amount. Card numbers go straight to the payment processor and never reach my systems.
Why I collect it
To open your classroom, track your progress, grade your work fairly, issue certificates, answer your questions, and keep records for the colleges when a course is offered for college credit. That is the whole list.
How AI is used
I use an AI assistant to take a first pass at the rubric and to flag writing that reads very differently from your own profile sample. Those results are private to me. They are never a grade on their own, and no automated decision is released to you. Every score and every comment you receive is read, adjusted, and sent by me. Your work is not used to train any AI model.
Who else sees it
Only the services that make the school run: the hosting and database platform that stores your account, the email service that delivers school mail, the payment processor that handles checkout, and the AI provider that powers the grading assistant. They process this information on my instruction and nothing more. Other students never see your work.
If you are taking a course through Santa Monica College or MiraCosta College, your official grade and enrollment records live with the college and are covered by the college's own student records policy.
Your files, downloads, and feedback
- Uploaded assignments and any screenshots you attach to course feedback are stored privately. Only you and I can open them.
- Downloads carry your email address in small print. That keeps each copy personal to you and discourages resharing. It is never shown to anyone else.
- Course feedback stays private. A review only appears publicly if you check the box saying it is okay to share, and you can ask me to take it down at any time.
Signing in with Brackish & Co
Brackish Course and its sister site Brackish & Co share one sign-in. When one site asks the other about you, the only answer given is your email address and whether you are enrolled. Your coursework, grades, messages, and purchases are not shared.
California privacy rights
Wherever you live, you can ask to know what I hold about you, get a copy, correct it, or delete it, and I will not treat you differently for asking. I do not sell your information and I do not share it for advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of.
Keeping it safe
Accounts, coursework, and files sit behind sign-in, and each person can reach only their own records. If your information is ever exposed, I will tell you promptly, explain what happened, and say what I am doing about it. Found a weakness? See the security page.
Cookies and tracking
The site stores a sign-in session in your browser so you stay logged in, and it keeps unsent drafts on your own device so you never lose your writing. There are no advertising cookies and no third-party tracking pixels.
How long I keep it
Coursework and certificate records stay as long as your account is open, so your certificate stays verifiable. Purchase records are kept as long as tax and accounting rules require. Ask me to close your account and I will delete your coursework, notes, and writing sample.
Your choices
Write to jules@brackishco.org and I will send you a copy of everything I hold on you, correct anything wrong, or delete your account. No forms, no runaround. I answer these myself.
Young learners
This school is built for adults and college students. It is not intended for children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that matters, I will email enrolled students rather than quietly swapping the text.
